Episode 24 - Wayne Ludbey

Wayne Ludbey has been a long time swimmer at Prahran Aquatic centre - or as we call it The Prahran Pool!

Wayne initially swam at Prahran pool before he headed off for a hectic day photographing sporting events. He felt, like many of us, it was a great way to start to the day with a clear mind.

These days Wayne meets up with buddies - to swim, sit in the sunshine and discuss world affairs! A great way to stay in touch, get some exercise and Vitamin D.

Wayne talks to me about meeting and photographing athletes and sports events, though most noteably his work with AFL and AFLW.

Then of course we discuss the  renowned photograph of Nicky Winmar taken in 1993.

This image of Nicky, captures the indigneous St Kilda FC player lifting his guernsey and pointing to his skin - saying " I'm proud to be Black". This action, beautifully captured by Wayne, was in response to the relentless racism and vilification hurled at both Nicky Winmar and Gilbert McAdam by Collingwood FC supporters.

All day the indigenous players had listened to the racial taunts of the Collingwood crowd on their home ground at Victoria Park.

The striking photograph then became a centrepiece for discussions on racism and vilification of Indigenous players in the AFL and it reflected the general racist attitude of many Australians. Sadly, this continues today, although with much less public acceptance. It is reflected in the campaigns that are run by  First Nations people to gain acceptance and acknowledgement of their culture and place in Australian society. The AFL continues to engage indigenous players to try and educate the playing community on indigenous affairs and also nurture and support the growing number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players in the League.

Wayne reflects on the legacy of the photograph for both himself and Nicky Winmar.

Waynes' fortunate and beautifully framed image is now globally recognised. The photo is subject of 4 documentaries and even a larger than life Bronze statue outside Perths Optus Stadium - Nickys' home state of Western Australia.

Wayne feels there could be a book on the event or maybe even a photographic journal in the future -  maybe on Football, or maybe on Swimwear! haha! Stay tuned.
